Faces of Solar: Sophia Peters, Senior Accountant, Trajectory Energy Partners

Sophia Peters’ journey into the solar industry is rooted in her passion for protecting the environment. While pursuing her undergraduate degree in Accounting at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, she minored in environmental sustainability and was involved in an extracurricular organization through her university that highlighted environmentally sustainable businesses in the community.

A few years after graduation, Sophia decided to use the knowledge and background she had gained in environmental sustainability and incorporate it into her career by beginning her work in Illinois’ solar energy industry. She joined Trajectory Energy Partners as a Senior Accountant in 2024, supporting Trajectory’s mission of bringing communities, organizations, and landowners together to develop quality solar projects that contribute to local economic growth and a sustainable energy future.

"Renewable energy is our future," Sophia said. "The sooner we embrace it, the better." As the demand for solar energy grows, she knows that working in the solar industry will allow her to contribute to a cleaner environment for herself and for generations to come.

Sophia believes more individuals should consider a career in Illinois’ solar industry, as Illinois is a leader and one of the fastest-growing states in the industry. In fact, the latest Solar Jobs Census found solar jobs in Illinois increased 5.7% from 2022 to 2023, with nearly 6,000 solar jobs across the state.

“One of the best ways to enter the clean energy space is to meet and connect with people already in the field,” Sophia added. “Building a robust professional network can open doors to a fulfilling career.”

Sophia advocates for broader solar energy adoption, noting the significant cost savings for consumers. She believes it’s crucial to educate residents and legislators about how clean energy works and its benefits. Having grown up in a farming community in rural Illinois, she is proud to support projects that benefit communities like the one she grew up in.

"It’s our future!" Sophia said, highlighting the urgency of continuing Illinois’ transition to a 100% clean energy future. "If people are more informed about clean energy and its positive impacts on our communities, it becomes easier to implement these solutions."
